How Long Does Ice Last in a Cooler? 1 to 4 Days
In a good hard cooler, ice lasts about three to four days. In a soft cooler or a cheap Styrofoam one, you get about a day. I’ve packed my RTIC 20 hard cooler on trips for two years, and the most I’ve gotten is four days, with the cooler pre-chilled, a mix of block and cube ice, and kept in the shade. How long your ice lasts comes down to two things: the cooler you use, and how you pack it.

These are the numbers I actually get. My RTIC 20 hard cooler holds ice three days in summer heat, and up to four when it’s cooler out. My RTIC 30 soft cooler gets a solid day, maybe a little more. A Styrofoam cooler I used once lasted about a day in the sun, and that was packed with cold drinks and mostly ice.
Pre-chill the cooler first
This is the biggest thing you can do. A warm cooler spends its first bag of ice just cooling its own walls down. I pre-chill mine before a trip by throwing in a bag of ice or some ice packs a few hours ahead, then dumping that and loading fresh ice when I leave. Use block ice, or a mix
Block ice melts slower than cubes because there’s less surface area for the same amount of ice. I’ve never gone block-only, but every time I’ve gotten four days out of my cooler it was a mix of block and cube. The cubes cool everything down fast and pack in around your food. If you can get both, do both.
Freeze your food so it works as ice
Before a trip I freeze whatever food I can, meat especially, so it goes in frozen and acts like extra ice blocks. It keeps everything else cold and thaws out by the time you’re ready to cook it, and it means less ice to pack.
Keep it in the coolest, shadiest spot
Ice melts faster the hotter it is around the cooler, so keep it out of direct sun. I put mine in the shade, or in the car if that’s cooler, and move it as the sun comes around.
Pack it full
A full cooler holds cold better than a half-empty one, because empty space just fills up with warm air. I usually pack about half ice and half food, though it depends on how much food I’m bringing and whether there’s a store close by to restock. If you’ve got extra room, fill it with more ice.
A real trip
I packed my RTIC Friday morning for a weekend trip, and it still had ice, about half melted, when I got home Sunday night. That’s three days in normal use, and I didn’t do anything special to protect it.
